Chepelare is the highest town in Bulgaria, located at 1200 m altitude in the hearth of the Rhodopes. The distance to
Pamporovo is only 10 km, 220 km to
Sofia and 70 km to
Plovdiv. The earliest reference to the city dates back to the Neolithic and in V - VI century the Slavs founded a settlement, which existed until the invasion of the Ottoman troops, which destroyed it completely. The modern town was established after the Liberation and developed as a cultural, educational and economic center of the region.
The climate in Chepelare is continental, as this is one of the sunniest villages in the country with over 270 sunny days per year. The snow cover lasts between 80 and 100 days and the winter is mild and warm. The spring comes much later and the summer is fresh and cool, which makes the region suitable for tourism during the whole year.
Chepelare has several ski slopes, among which is the longest in Bulgaria (over 5 km), two chair lifts and several small drags. The slopes are open from December to April, depending on the amount of snow. The good conditions and the proximity to Pamporovo make the region attractive and popular ski destination.
