General information about Pomorie
Pomorie is situated on a rocky peninsula, 20 km away from Bourgas and 400 km away from Sofia. The town was founded in the 4th century BC, by the Thracians, under the name of Anchialo, near the salty lakes that they considered sacred because of its curative properties. The earliest traces of human activity are from 6000 BC. The beach of Pomorie is about 5 kilometers long, and Pomorie has up to 2360 sunshine hours per year, which makes it popular tourist destination. The city has a port through which is possible to sail to Varna, Burgas, Nessebar and Sozopol. Under Roman rule the city minted coins, which is a measure of the political and the economic prosperity. The city has built sanatoriums, because of the mineral springs and the healing properties of the mud from the salt lakes. Cape Sea Pomorie on Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands in Antarctica was named in honor of the city.

Nowadays it is male Orthodox monastery. At the end of the 18th century Turk Selim Bey settled in the area and makes a great feud. The Turk were suffering from an incurable, painful illness. His farmhand Neno, dreamed that in the courtyard of the mansion runs spring with healing water, and St. George, riding a white horse. Neno initially did not pay attention to his dreams, but eventually he excavated the site of the yard that he dreamed about, and there he found a marble bas-relief of St. George and from there immediately started to squirting water. Selim bey drank from the water and was healed. Amazed by the miracle Selim Bey and his family got baptized, accepting the Christian faith then he built a chapel. Subsequently Selim’s wife died, and he became a monk and the first abbot of the monastery. He donated his possessions from 3800 dka land. The monastery contains many valuable specimens of the iconographic art of XVIII and XIX century.
