Ski track in Borovets

Borovets is one of the oldest ski resorts in Bulgaria, but it is also the largest. It is situated at 1,300 meters above sea level on the northern slopes of Rila Mountain, beneath Musala peak. Borovets is just 70 km away from Sofia, with a car rented from Top Rent A Car and 120 km away from Plovdiv. Unlike Bansko, which achieves 10 000 people during the winter, Borovets is quiet, suitable for skiing and mountain climbing, as well as for outdoor recreation.

The dense pine forests around the resort make it very beautiful and charming place to rest, attracting local and foreign tourists during the winter season. With the upcoming project "Super Borovets" resort will try to regain the old glory of the leading ski destination in Bulgaria.

Borovets’ ski area is divided in two regions- the smaller area is serviced by two chairlifts, many lifts and auxiliary tracks, a few black slopes, one long blue slope, and several red once.

The second ski area is much larger, with more red slopes and long blue slopes. It is accessible by lift. Borovets is mostly ski resort for beginners and intermediate skiers, because of the large number of blue and red slopes, but it provides several black slopes as well for the pros. You will find several ski schools there and many places for recreation and entertainment.

Winter landscape in Borovets

Close to Borovets is the largest National Park and Preserve - Rila. The National Park includes the Seven Lakes of Rila, famous worldwide with their beauty. Park visitors have the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful nature and the rich biodiversity.

Little further south is the largest monastery in Bulgaria - Rila Monastery. Built in remote 927-941, Rila Monastery managed to survive more than a millennium, though it had been a victim of fires on several occasions and rebuilt afterwards. It is the most important Christian monument in Bulgaria, and during the Turkish slavery it was literary and educational center. Rila monastery is included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage.
