The Varna Airport’s construction started in 1946 and was opened in May 1948. The Airport was small and operated only to connect Varna with the capital Sofia. Then a new terminal was built in 1972 with a new runway in 1974. Since then the destinations and passengers increased.
The Airport is very-well situated: it’s 8 km away from the city of Varna and has a direct connection to the main international roads E-70 and E-87. The regular bus line 409 connects the airport with the city; its route is the city of Aksakovo, the airport, the bus station, three of the largest malls in the city, the center, then the summer resorts and the Free University of Varna. Of course, the bus isn’t the best choice when loaded with luggage, so there are plenty of taxis, and some of them even charge an agreed amount to some of the most regular destinations.
Since 2006 the Varna and Bourgas airports are given a concession to the company Fraport Twin Star Airport Management. The contracts are for 35 years and the company has high expectations of their concession. Fraport plan to construct a brand new terminal, expand the destinations, improve the quality of the services, and split the Schengen and non-Schengen passengers’ streams.
FlightsAlthough the Airport operates all the year, its main stream of passengers is during the summer. Varna’s summer resorts tempt lots of foreign tourists and therefore the number of flights and destinations increases from April to October. The climax is in August and in the beginning of September when the Airport is proud to handle more than 100 flights a day. The regular all-year flights connect Varna with London, Budapest, Vienna, the Bulgarian capital Sofia and as of 2010 with Moscow.
Varna Airport offers great services both to those who travel and to those who are waiting for their families and friends to arrive. The arrival terminal has a change bureau and a duty-free shop that can be explored while the passengers wait for their luggage to be unloaded. The Lost And Found office is situated in the terminal itself, so if a luggage hasn’t arrived, it can be reported right away. Outside the arrival terminal there are several kiosks, offices, a bank branch, and coffee shop.
The departure terminal offers to the passengers a luxurious coffee shop, a fast food restaurant where pizza and Bulgarian national dishes can be ordered, a well-stocked duty-free shop with spirits, cigarettes, perfumes, toys and an especially established shop for Bulgarian souvenirs, spirits and yogurt. The departure terminal has a vast terrace that overlooks the ramp and the runway, so the passengers can admire the airplanes while waiting for their flight. Since smoking is prohibited inside the airport buildings, the terrace represents a smoking area.
