
Plovdiv Airport
General Information
Plovdiv Airport serves the second largest city in Bulgaria. The airport is located only 13 km away from the city of Plovdiv, on the motorway Plovdiv – Asenovgrad - Pamporovo; and is only a kilometre away from the railway station Mavrudovo. It’s also known as Krumovo Airport because of the near village by the same name. Plovdiv Airport is close to the winter resorts Bansko, Pamporovo and Borotvets, and to the spa-resorts Hissarya and Velingrad. It’s situated 140 km away from the Bulgarian capital and by car can the distance to Sofia can be travelled for less than an hour and a half on Trakiya highway. That’s why Plovdiv Airport has the status of an alternate airport when the weather conditions in Sofia prevent the airbuses from landing.
28 years after the airport started operating in 1981, the management of the Plovdiv Airport constructed a new terminal that has the possibility to welcome about 1000 passengers per hour, four new gates and a new runway. The new constructions are in use since August 2009.

Flights
Being near to the winter resorts, the Plovdiv Airport represents the main gate to the snowy and beautiful Bulgarian mountains. The summer may be its weakest season, but the winter pays off with numerous flights to UK, Ireland, Russia, Austria, Ukraine, Belarus, Poland and Turkey. There are regular internal flights to Bourgas that allow the passengers to choose from a wide range of set in different time flights. The Airport also serves cargo flights.
Services
Plovdiv Airport is part of organizations such as IATA, ECAC and ICAO. That’s why the applied security measures can be compared to those applied on any European airport. The airport has a parking lot that is free of charge. Its terminals offer the passengers a duty-free shop, coffee shop, fast-food, VIP lounge, ATM, free Wi-Fi access, baby-rooms and PRM facilities, orthodox chapel, free of charge luggage trolleys. The Plovdiv Airport also provides services for general aviation flights, flight training schools, cargo flights, special emergency flights.
Attractions
Opposite the Plovdiv Airport there’s Krumovo Air Base. In 1961 there’s formed the 44th Helicopter Air Regiment that in 1981 was converted into 24th Helicopter Air Base of the Bulgarian Air Force. In 1991 in the base was opened the only one in Bulgaria Museum of Aviation.
The Plovdiv Airport hosts every year since 2005 an aviation show. The show is performed on 6th of September when the city also celebrates the Day of Plovdiv.
